During the Nanban trade, Macau was filled with adventures, scientists, and religious personalities transiting through the small outpost to Japan, China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. It was a very exciting place but these moments were unfortunately never depicted. Here, the artist decided to fill the void and interpret this period by traveling in time to 1622 to depict the Battle of Macau, an important turning point in the history of Macau. A small group of Portuguese and Macanese fighters defeated the much bigger and better prepared invading army of the Dutch East India Company. Impressing the Mandarins of the Chinese empire, they managed to extend the Portuguese stay in Macau by a few centuries on the condition that they pay rent. All traders and their families who desired to enter China had to stay in Macau and wait for permission for entry, with Macau serving as the gateway. Eventually the Portuguese became the new gatekeepers to China for a few centuries. Painted with Konstantin's usual twisted sense of humor as if it were made by a Japanese artist of the 17th century.
