In Macau and Hong Kong, there was a lot of intelligence gathering activities during and after both World Wars. The secret services roamed around the two territories and it's no surprise that Ian Fleming wrote about them in his book Thrilling Cities. In this painting, we clearly see the East meets West environment with smaller artworks on the wall that depict the story of Hong Kong, from Queen Victoria to the founding of Hong Kong and the Opium Trade. The final intrigue comes when our eyes set upon the lonely table, tea spilling over the tablecloth, with a character nestled in a palanquin waiting for someone to pick him up or hiding in fear of being discovered.
